About half of the calls are from homeowners who have paid a deposit to a builder or supplier (i.e. of a kitchen) only to find out that the builder or supplier has vanished or not done what they said they would. The remaining calls are from builders, subcontractors, kitchen manufacturers, bathroom renovators and various other suppliers who have carried out the building work in good faith and are then told there is no money available to pay them. BUILDSAFE® is a service designed to help reduce the number of people who lose money on a construction project. BUILDSAFE is a security of payment scheme specifically designed for the building and construction industry in New Zealand. The service is very simple: rather than pay a "deposit" to a builder or supplier, the money is paid into the BuildSafe Trust Account. The money is then held in trust until the work is properly completed and then released to the builder or supplier.
